For what purpose do you need the IP address? There are different answers depending on what you need.

If you're behind a router or cable modem, the answer you may be looking for is what is known as the "outside IP address" or "visible IP address". You can get this by surfing to a site like http://www.whatsmyip.org/ . This particular site says it in BIG GRAY LETTERS.

If you mean just the IP address assigned to the network interface (wireless card, ethernet card), then there are a couple of ways:

1. Right-click on the Network Manager icon in your taskbar and click on "connection information"
      ... or ...
2. Open a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). At the prompt, type "ifconfig" and hit enter. That command will display a bunch of information about each interface. Among the data will be "inet addr". That's your answer.
