How to run a command as "superuser"...

Asked by JBDavis

I installed clamav and tried to run it. I was told that I did not have adequate privilages to make changes and such.

I have also run into problems with other packages because I do not have "superuser" status. How can I give that to myself or get Ubuntu to recognize me as the system admin?

You need to be root. Have a look at the ubuntu help.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo
Also why do you feel the need to install clamav? I have been a ubuntu user for 2 years and had no problems with viruses what so ever. My security is just ufw (ubuntu's firewall) and my own knowledge not to download anything from questionable sources.

Hope that helps
Shane

Hey Shane,
This really helps. Now I just need to lean how to work Terminal. Like I said, I am new to Linux.
Why clamav? Well, I got a virus warning from my gateway server and ISP. But primarily because I have a lot of files (doc's, gif's and pic's) to load on this thing, since I got the new HD. I need some way to make sure that none of the few Linux viruses are in them.

So, Ubuntu comes with a firewall? I don't need Guarddog? That is cool.

Seems I have a lot to learn.
