Hello

try these commands

cd /var/lib/dpkg
mv status status-bad
cp status-old status

and then

sudo apt-get update

You might want additionally to remove the lock

sudo rm -f /var/lib/dpkg/lock

I heard the linux community responds very quickly but now I experienced. thank you. I tried the commands but not no use. probably the problem may be due to installation of ubuntu is on vista, after making partitions. I have 4 partitions. at present vista is not working.
when I used above commands this is the response
deena@deena-laptop:~$ cd/var/lib/dpkg
bash: cd/var/lib/dpkg: No such file or directory
deena@deena-laptop:~$ mv status status-bad
mv: cannot stat `status': No such file or directory
deena@deena-laptop:~$ cp status-old status
cp: cannot stat `status-old': No such file or directory
deena@deena-laptop:~$ media/disk-2/var/lib/dpkg
bash: media/disk-2/var/lib/dpkg: No such file or directory
deena@deena-laptop:~$

if you get a permission denied error you should add a sudo in front of the command

finally I tried with debian, red hat. Then i tried to install ubuntu 8.10 with new iso file. but it drained my brain for partiotioning. I never faced that much problem with windows. Now I succeeded and my update manager is working alright. virtual machine and many other applications are running fine.
Telugu and Hindi language text, even though I am able to type. please advise
