How to I get access to my hard disks?

I have no permission when trying to create a folder, or any other editing functions on my drives. I have been reading all about permissions on the web, is it a terminal command that will let me access and edit my drives?(have no idea how to use that still) Or something else, I am pretty lost...

Is this happening in every directory you have in the machine - including your /home?

You can create folders with sudo (and edit conf files too):

sudo mkdir mynewfolder

now that you mention it, the home folder is the only folder I can edit, how can I have the same privileges on my drives? - side note - how do I read that command you just gave me to create a folder, what is the mkdir part?

You see: in Ubuntu the only place you have full admin rights is in your /home folder. In other places you need to invoke root user to make changes.
You do that by using "sudo" before the instruction you want to run. In this case I told you how to perfom a mkdir (a "make dir" instruction: the one that will create a folder for you) in the terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal)
The same goes when you wan to edit conf files that are not located in your / home. You cannot do it with your user standard rights.
