This does not answer the question; when the password is not accepted; I mean just that; it responds telling me the password is not valid.

Apri Applicazioni→Accessori→Terminale e digita:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

Ciao

Vediamo se così ti sparisce l'errore

Apri Applicazioni→Accessori→Terminale e digita:

sud apt-get clean
sudo dpkg --configure -a

Se ottieni ancora errore e lo stesso errore moficheremo il file che ti da' problemi...

Ciao

if is not possible to re-download you have to type
sud apt-get clean
sudo dpkg --configure -a

Before I modify anything; it helps to know what I need to modify; in what way I modify it; and how to gain access to the file when my password is being rejected. By now; it should not be hard to understand; I am new at Linux. I have seen the current version of Windows and the more I look at Windows; the more I look at Linux. I am currently in the process of switching over to the "new" operating system. Currently I am running a dual boot; (Windows eXtra Problems and Linux). I am getting fed up with M$ announcing they will no longer support a selected version of their software thinking that will force me to BUY a NEWer release. I hope by the time M$ announces they will no longer support extra problems; I will be in a position to clean off the extra problems partition and make it available for the Linux OS. Yet when I receive notice of an update; and when I click download and install; and it responds with an error message I need to run "what ever" to correct it; and to run "what ever" I need to log on to "terminal" as admin; and all at once the password I use to log on to Linux is not accepted when I log on to the terminal level to correct the update. ALL passwords on ALL machines here at my house have the same password. This makes it easier for not only me; but also my wife; to remember how to log on. When my machine tells me password is invalid; I first think a typing mistake. So I try again; and again; invalid. So I pull up gEdit and type the password in; copy and paste into terminal and still invalid! I am to the point of taking a closer look at Vista!!!

If my messages appear in italian; it was not me who typed the message. I do not know a word of italian. I sometime struggle with American English; I speak very well Texas English; anything other than that; and it is all "Greek to me".

i have one issue with that "solution"; I type in my password; and I get a response password is invalid; I try again; and again I get the invalid message. I pull up gEdit; type in my password; copy the password I typed; paste it into the terminal prompt; and hit the enter key; and again I get the invalid password message.

I have made note of your solution; so if I ever get past the password request; I can try out your solution

Please try this: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

or

To discover your user and restore (change) the password you can:

Start the pc the when you see the GRUB row...

Press ESC.

Press "e" for edit.

Highlight the line that begins kernel ………, and press "e"

Go to the very end of the line, add rw init=/bin/bash

press enter, then press "b" to boot your system.

Your system will boot up to a passwordless root shell.

Type in grep -i 1000 /etc/passwd

The system must show a row with your user name at the start of the row
for example:
danilo:x:1000:1000:ubuntu,,,:/home/danilo:/bin/bash

Here my user is danilo

Then to change your user password type in:

passwd username

or

passwd -d username

change username with your real user

Set your password.

Type in:

reboot

or

reboot -f

Hope this helps

So far; it seem to fix this problem; I need to reset my password to the console. Yet what this does not explain is why can't the password to the console be the same as that when I log on. When I installed linux; I do not recall any prompt for a second password; and if there was; I am sure I would have given it the same password as my log on password. The password I assigned to the log on; is the same as the password I use when I log on to Windows. Every password on every machine in the house is the same. Yet for some reason the console seems to "think" the password is not the same; or for some reason the password is corrupt. In that case I would not be able to log on. Yet I am able to log on. My password is accepted every time I log on with out any problems. Yet the last few times I have gotten an Linux Update message; I have been prompted for a password; (as if the person who logged on is not the same person who is logged on). I then get the error message I mentioned at the top of this discussion. So when I attempt to follow the instructions of the error message; I attempt to log on to the terminal console; and all at once the password I had been using from the time I logged on is no longer valid.

This OS has been some what confusing since the first day I installed it. Up until just recently; I had been impressed with how often the "update manager" notified me of an update. yet these last few weeks; the updates have been ignored due to the issues I have been having with the password. The OS seems to be a very intelligent; may be some day it will figure out there is nothing wrong with my password and install the updates with out asking me for it.
