loading Windows programmes on ubuntu 6.10 for AMD 64 bit

Asked by Francois Wilke

Loading non-Debian applications on Ubuntu 6.10 for AMD 64 processors

I attempted to load Dragon Naturally Speaking 8 (preferred edition) for Windows by using the following method: Click system>administration>software sources>third party tab>+add Cdrom.

The operation failed and returned the following error message:

“Error scanning the CD

E:Unable to locate any package files, perhaps this is not a Debian Disc”

WineHQ is the only windows emulator listed at Applications>Add/Remove, but it is stated there that WineHQ does not work on AMD 64 processors.

How do I load Dragon Naturally Speaking 8 (preferred edition) for Windows on my Ubuntu 6.10 for AMD64 system?

Thanking you in anticipation

First.. don't try this. It's only for ubuntu cd's with packages.

Second.. there is Cedega for games.. but you need to pay for it. You can learn more about it at http://www.transgaming.com

Wine does not (yet) support 64bit computers.
But their are several options to (try) running wine on a 64bit computer.

Here's one option you could try in the Ubuntu Wiki:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WineForAMD64

Another option (but it's more difficult and not the best) is running wine in a 32bit chroot:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=24575&highlight=32+bit+chroot

I don't know if version 8 of Dragon Naturally Speaking works but version 7 works, check here for tips for installing with wine etc:
