i need to install a registry cure program on windows, or to run chkdsk on the drive so I can install ubuntu. How do I run the .exe . It is on my flash drive.

Asked by Richard

Will the exe operate on windows? From where, and how do I execute. Can I install nero and have it work in windows?

As for your registry problems thats a windows problem.
"fsck" is chkdisk in linux
.exe files are windows installation files which cant be run by ubuntu by default.
If you install wine (A program to add windows compatibility to linux) you can run most windows programs.
Applications>Add and remove
Then search for wine.

Hope that helps

I installed wine. Cannot seem to execute it.
Used sudo wine to execute at terminal.
Cannot find wine in any drop downs.
I am executing ubuntu from a cd; will this make a difference?

At Windows welcome screen hit CTRL+ALT+DEL twice. For user name choose as administrator and use a blank password. This will get you into windows.

As for installing Ubuntu, I suggest that you do NOT install Ubuntu using Wubi.

The Wubi installer does not create a real linux ext3 filesystem, instead it creates a large filesystem within windows and install ubuntu to that. Because its embedded in Windows, if you have any problem with Windows due to viruses or other issues like file corruption. You will also damage you Ubuntu installation. I recommend installing Ubuntu and Windows in dual mode.

Thank you

Are you trying to rescue windows or install over it? If you just want to install over it you shouldn't need to do any of this. Just install and the drive will be reformatted and ubuntu will be installed.

I am trying to recover windows to no avail. So far I do not get into windows with WW Smiths suggestion. Almost at the point of deciding to do a complete install.

I'm not sure you will be able to run a windows registry tool in Linux even via wine. The point of wine is to run windows apps that have value in Linux. A registry cleaner doesn't. Even if you could, I don't know if it would do anything as I think the registry has to be running to be used but I'm not sure. I'm just thinking that if windows isn't booted it may not help any.

Doesn't windows have any tools for fixing itself? I think a call to the computer manufacture is in order. They should be able to help or you can try the recovery option on a windows CD

Not to rude or anything but most people here are not going to be overly helpful with a windows issue (although I bet we are more helpful than the windows forums :))

Very helpful forum.
For windows Press f8 when booting then sign in as administrator. The password is blank. Even with signing in I had to download a free ware registry editor. run that, then do a checkdisk. It was wwsmith that sent me searching for alternate ways into windows as I was locked out of admin priviledges it appeared. I needed to solve the issues in order to partition and to later install ubuntu.
I will do the dual boot as recommended by Jim. Thanks for all the help .
Great forum.
