Unable to record using Sound Recorder application

Asked by alimo

Recording is not working. Also I tried KRec sound application, I got same problem no recording. It worked with windows operating system. The hardware is connected correct. the sound driver in Ubonto is not detected correct. I can hear sound when initial booting., but no recording or playback.
How do I fix and troubleshoot this problem? Is there a linux sound driver for my computer needed?
My computer is running with Asus Mother board model M3A32-MVP Deluxe Series, and AMD processor 64
If there is driver How do I install it?
Thanks
alimo

SOLVED:
=====

I installed a non-brand external usb-soundcard. Put the microphone on that and Ubuntu 8.04.01
identified the usb-soundcard. Recording works even Ekiga. ASUS M3A-MVP Deluxe Motherboard.

FURTHER INFORMATION OF PROBLEM SOLVING:
=========================================

Unfortunately some time has gone, so I don't remember exactly the process how to solve.
I give this information still when I had this problem, I didn't find anywhere on the net, who had
ASUS M3A-MVP Deluxe with 8.04.
However, the unworking ASUS M3A-MVP Deluxe motherboard was not able to get micro-
phone working. Therefore I bought Taiwanese external usb-soundcard having micro-
phone input , and loudspeaker (2.1) and earphone output. By restarting the system,
I think, I succeeded to identify the microphone out-of-the-box, since I have with lsusb
the following device installed (below). The alsamixer-program, which I have installed
identifies now two sound cards:
1) C-Media USB (which microhone works, when you plug it to usb-soundcards input)
2) The old on-mobo soundcard (which still doesn't work, but who cares!)

So the procedure:
1) Buy the device (other usb-soundcard might also work) and install on usb-port of the computer
2) Boot the system.
3) If problems, select from System->Settings->Sound tab Devices,
Default Mixer tracks: change to:C-Media USB Headphone Set (Alsa Mixer). You see on
that tab also HDA ATI SB (Alsa mixer), which mic doesn't work.
4) Check your usb-devices with lsusb, following should be seen: (use terminal,
Applications -> accessories?? -> Terminal and type to prompt:

lsusb

You should see the usb-device installed:
.....
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0d8c:000c C-Media Electronics, Inc. Audio Adapter
....

I have all audio working, but I have two sets of loudspeakers. The most comes from
the new card, but some of my old software installation before solving the microphone
problem use the old loudspeakers, sound come from both soundcards. This
is solvable, but i don't care, I just want working system. Experience has been stable
from audio functionality. Even ekiga and webex works.
