i can't use the terminal

I can't understan terminal funcionality please help me, what can i do to use and install alien if i have donwload in my desktop

Hello !

Terminal is a tool that emulates a text console (i.e. command line, similar to old DOS style). Opening a terminal (you certainly have one available via the menu) opens a window with a command prompt (just like it would in windows after typing "cmd").

In a terminal, you can issue commands you want the computer to do ... A tutorial is available here : http://www.linuxcommand.org/learning_the_shell.php

Now, how to install alien ... To answer that, I'll need more information : what is alien ? What's the name of the file you downloaded (XXX.deb, XXX.rpm, XXX.tar.gz, XXX.tar.bz2, ...) ?

To install Alien run this command in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install alien
