Installing package error message

Asked by George J

Hi all)

I am a newbie in Linux, I have just installed ubuntu ( 8.04) and downloaded nvidia video driver as a package. I tried to install it and got a message : -

ERROR: nvidia-installer must be run as root

I am signed as myself and don´t know where root comes into it.....I assume root being the top level login, but I dont know how to logon as root tocomplete the installation.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance..

First -- you can install driver easy via Restricted driver manager -- go to System→Administration→Hardware drivers and install it ;)

The error means, you need to be admin (root) to install this -- read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

Thanks Vojtech, I used restricted driver manager to start the installation, and it went like a dream.

Thanks for your assistance, very much appreciated.
