lost my minimize, maximize and "x" sign on all windows on top right corner of all windows

Lost on all windows I open up the top tab with the minimize, maximize and exit icons on top right corner.

there are 2 possibilities that i can think of here. i'll outline both solutions.

the first problem i could think of would be that your window manager isn't running. to solve this:
press alt+f2 and then type metacity and hit enter

the second problem would be that your metacity theme has disabled your window settings. to solve this:
open a terminal and type gconf-editor
this will open a program called gconf-editor which you can use to restore them. to restore these buttons in the left side panel navigate to /apps/metacity/general/ and then choose the "button_layout" property. double click on it and set the value to "menu:minimize,maximize,close"

i hope one of these solutions solves your problem
