You have to edit as root.
So e.g. "gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf" → it will open this file in text editor gedit with root privilegies...

More about root and sudo here - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

Thanks for the reply, that allowed me to edit the file, however, no of the posted solutions worked for my intellimouse optical USB/PS2 compatible mouse. Do you have any further suggestions?

Yes, but I need to know exact type of the mouse.

It is a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical USB/PS2 compatible with five buttons, left click, rightclick scroll wheel, and forward and back thumb buttons. Cannot find model number anywhere on it.
