sound card not detected

I have Dell inspiron 1520 laptop......but it cannot play sound when i click the volume icon near the clock it says NO Gstreamer plugin or devices found.....can any one help me on this ...i am new to linux........and googling about the problem from many days but i am not able to suceed.......and neither i am getting sound from my headphones

Hello there. This is a popular laptop so there is a lot of information available. The problem you are having can be solved by installing the "linux-backports-modules-generic" package, you can install this from Synaptic or at the terminal type: sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-generic

Install this package then reboot and your sound should be working, make sure to check the volume control after rebooting and add "Front" speaker to check it is not muted.
