Why not just reinstall Windows and reinstate your user data from backup. You do have a backup if the data is important, right?

But what if the drive IDE failed or the motor didn't spin the platter? Where is your important data? Doesn't sound very 'important' at all. Compare the price of a USB drive giving guaranteed data recovery to that of professional forensic data recovery services which may not retrieve the data you need. Are you seriously that naive? Think about it. ......

You can boot to Ubuntu live CD and install foremost. I am unsure if it will recover from NTFS and you may need a Windows tool meaning you will need another Windows PC to put the drive in and treat as raw data. If foremost will recover NTFS then you will need a storage of similar or greater size than the disk to recover from. You will lose filenames and location data but files may be wholly or damaged.

If the data area where files were held have been overwritten with new data then they are GONE and completely irretrievable by any means.

Why do you not have a backup? This would sidestep all this effort and cost. 1Tb USB drives cost peanuts. ...
