The package linux-image 3.0.0-32-generic is part of Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition and Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop edition, which are both end-of-life and not supported anymore.

I assume you are using Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition and NOT Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition , because you are mentioning the use of synaptic, which is normally not installed on the server edition of Ubuntu (I think).

So I suggest performing a backup of your data and performing a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS which is supported until April 2017.
