in Terminal when asked for sudoer pw it will not allow input of characters typed .

I downloaded printer installation for Linux. i.e. the hplip-3.13.7.run file to the Desktop. I opened Terminal and typed in commands as instructed. started the run program. when prompted for sudoer pw I cud not enter it. the insertion point was flashing, but when I attempted to type in pw characters it wud not input on terminal screen.

You run the file as your user and type your user password when prompted (you will not get feedback as you type but it IS being accepted).

Or you can try to run the .run file as root user from the begin.
This is not recommended for all scripts, .run files..etc, but as you know that this file is trusted (HP .run file) you can do it.

    sudo ./hplip-3.13.7.run

Write your password when prompted, as @actionparsnip said, you will not get any feedback, no asterisks or anything. Just type it carefully and hit [ENTER].

If you do the script will moan. It needs running as user.
