sudo reboot

or

sudo reboot -f , for immediately - force reboot of the system.

or

sudo shutdown -r now (-r = reboot)

Thanks

it keeps booting and going back to the dos mode and terminal , i want it to start like it did before i install 12.04

So when you boot, you don't get a GUI login screen? Is that right? If so, what do you see onscreen once you bootup?
