Dear Alexandre,

the terminal is no seven-headed monster. You can do the same thing i will tell you with the synaptic package manager, but it is a lot easier to do it (and also to explain) if you do it on the terminal.

First, let me congratulate you by coming to the ubuntu community and to switch from windows to free software. As time goes by, and your knowledge increase, you will start to realize that Linux is a lot more powerful and flexible than windows. Because it is so customizable, alternatives are plenty.

Flash and java are proprietary formats so their licenses prohibit Ubuntu to come with those, but you are free to install and run them.

It is very simple. Open the terminal by going to the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal. Type:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

If you are using kubuntu or xubuntu, substitute them on the line above (e.g. kubuntu-restricted-extras). It will install support not only for java and flash, but for DVD, mp3, and microsoft core fonts (times new roman, verdana, arial, etc.)

Enjoy.

There is a bug with flashplugin-nonfree that you will soon encounter. See Bug 173890 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=636397
