Blank terminal (and 'broken' frame header)

Asked by Nigel Marsh

I'm very new to the world of Ubuntu and I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, Unity GUI. When I open the Terminal via Dash I get a blank screen. (I also notice that the coloured background of the frame header has a broken jigsaw pattern. I don't know if that is a visual guide to there being another problem or if it is a design feature. I get this visual effect with other window frames.)

I checked the forums and ran the following commands. Although they ran successfully they did not fix the problem.

lsb_release -a; uname -a
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Ctrl + Alt + F7
Ctrl + Alt + T

I would attach a screenshot but I can't see how to do that.

Can anyone suggest a fix?

Thanks

Nigel

The first command only outputs information. It doesn't actually change anything....

Have you tried Unity2D session?

Sorry but I don't know how to run a Unity 2D session. Soon after installing Ubuntu I installed MyUnity and I notice that by changing the settings the text becomes visible again. So at some stage I guess I must have changed something there without realising the consequences.

If you can spare the time could you tell me how to run Unity 2D? It's installed but I don't know if that means it's running.

As I mentioned earlier I'm very, very new to Ubuntu.

On the login screen, before you log in click the Ubuntu logo near your username and choose the Unity2D session, then log in. It uses Metacity instead of Compiz and you'll probably get a lot fewer issues :)
