Asked by euprunner

I'm moving a 300gb sata drive from my windows box to my ubuntu box. I removed all files and reformatted ntfs. Ubuntu cannot mount even with the recommended command line force mounting.. any ideas? drive seems to be fine except for this

Why did you reformat with ntfs? Do you want to use it with both windows and ubuntu? What error messages do you get?

I reformated using the windows machine before I pulled it from the windows box... after I installed it into the ubuntu box, ubuntu was unable to mount volume.. it goes on to say that log file indicates unclean shutdown. list possible solutions such as having windows "safely remove hardware".. I had been using the drive internally on the windows box and could not find such an option.. I don't need the drive to be ntfs but I'm not sure how to make it anything else

Okay. Such problems with "unclean shutdown" for example come from powering windows down while booting.

You could try to format it as ext3 if you don't need good windows access. This will be easier. Therefore install the program/package "gparted", start it, select the drive, delete the ntfs-partition, create a new ext3 partition, apply the changes (Attention! All data stored on the drive will be lost! So be sure to have a backup!) and reboot. After that you'll be able to use the formated drive.

Can you help with this problem?
