Asked by Don

I tried to download google earth and it seems to do so in a window that pops up, downloads!
I try to open it and an error pops up!
My operating system is; Lynux v 4.1.3 / Ubuntu 2.20.1 / Xorg v 1.3.0
Is my system compatible to do this?

It is saved in the down loads folder and titled; googleearthlynux.bin .
The error message is as follows:
gedit has not been able to detect the character coding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character coding from the menu and try again.

OK. Open a terminal (you can do this by pressing Alt+F2 and write gnome-terminal to the run application dialog or simply go to the Applications->Accessories->Terminal). Type this command
./googleearthlynux.bin

(Be carefull there is a . (dot) and a / (slash) before googleearthlynux.bin)

if there is a message says that googleearthlinux.bin is not an executable file etc. then type this command first:

chmod u+x GoogleEarthLinux.bin

Hit enter and type this:

./GoogleEarthLinux.bin

Thank you sooooooo much!!!
Without people like you, the internet would be a smaller place!
This forums' help to me is why I donate $ to Ubuntu and F.S.F.!
I actually answered a question another person had for the forum, and I'm a Neanderthal !!!

Mine is installed, but the danged 'button' on the desktop doesn't work. I've tried changing properties to no avail.

I have to open an admin terminal, cd to the directory where the program is and type ./googeearth every time to get it working.

How do you make a 'button' to open a program?

Also, checking the available help, it says I can change a file's properties using System|Preferences|File Management, but I don't have the File Management option on my Ubuntu for some reason??? Any help on that?
