Recover data from sudo command

Asked by Dale Satre

I saw this picture proclaiming how to refresh Macs.

DON'T RUN THE COMMAND ON THE IMAGE, IT WILL DELETE ALL YOUR SYSTEM

I tried to see if it worked in Ubuntu. I typed in [sudo ** *****] EDITED: IT'S A DANGEROUS COMMAND

Now I can't get to anything but minimalist GRUB menu, and I fear that everything was deleted.

Any way to recover my files? I don;t care about the programs, I only care about the files.

Please if you can modify immediately the command, an user can do your same error! DO NOT TYPE IT INTO YOUR SYSTEM!!!
Now, if you have stopped the command, probably your data are on your hd, try with a LiveCD of ubuntu to see if they are there. If not you should use a program to recovery the data but it's a looong process: you should remove the hd from your PC, insert it into another and run a program for recover the data and hope that it works (it's not secure that it will work).

It recursively deletes everything in the _file system_. Everything.

If you'd read the comments further down you would have seen the warnings, and you should never run anything without knowing what it does. You can find out what things do with the manual page.

man rm

for example takes you to the manual page for the remove command, where you can also see that the option -rf means to recursively delete all files and directories while never prompting you.

Chalk it up to experience, but I do hope you had backups of all important data.
