a small functionality in the terminal improving usability

Asked by T0eJam

Hi there,

I was wondering whether it is possible to add a feature to the gnome terminal.

It's something very common in MATLAB for example and might really improve usability(to my mind).

When you start typing a command and stop after maybe three characters pressing up will search the command line history and call back commands you used before starting with the same string. I try doing that in terminal all the time and notice that it might help others as well. I know that pressing up without typing anything would achieve that as well, but it requires a lot of pressing up to get to the wanted command sometimes.

I am by no means a developer and if this is the incorrect place for this question I apologise, but you might want to consider implementing that.

If this feature is already implemented then I am sorry. I haven't found how to do it.

Thank you

There are already some features similar to that available, see http://weichen.wordpress.com/2007/01/20/howto-quick-search-terminal-history-commands/

Same functionality is already in terminal. Press <Tab> key, and it will search, following context potential commands (if commands is a file and not a shell command), files or environment variable.

commands in terminal are already 2 or 3 characters, so there's no real need for it. you can scroll through commands you already used by pressing the up and down arrow keys.
