Users cannot shutdown at CLI without sudo etc. You can add the shutdown command to visudo and it will not need a password.

su to root will not work in ubuntu as there is no root password and authentication will fail

A more elegant way is to allow shutdown for non-privileged users via PolicyKit.

ALT-sysreq then with the two keys held down, R, E, I, S, U, O

@adbiz: Uh... this will work, but it's pretty rough...

well, either take it rough or put some effort into typing sudo in front of shutdown
