working in terminal - getting commands clarified

Is there a list of commands, or a summary of main commands for various operations in Terminal? If there are such lists, where can I find them?

I want to know the meanings of, for example: "are you root?", "run as root" and similar phrases.

What is 'shell' and what is 'bin' ? Is there a glossary available?

I am confused at the way the hyphen and space are used in command lines. Is there a standard method?

I'd suggest https://help.ubuntu.com/cummunity/RootSudo for anybody having doubts as to what 'sudo', 'su' and 'root' commands are for and how to play it safe when using these commands.
