Yea Im having the same problem. I really want to learn how to use and enjoy Ubuntu, but its been a struggle for me so far. Anyway, I fially figured out where the terminal thing is, but when I type "su", it pompts me for my password, and every time I put it in it tells me

su: Authentication failure
Sorry.

Please help!

Dougie, Have you installed java from the add/remove programs? See https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/programming.html for the best way to install Java

The password for your terminal is the same password that you use to log in. The screen doesn't give you feed back as you type by design, but you should be able to hit enter once you've finished typing and have it accept it.

BB454: Ubuntu uses sudo rather than su by default, where you would normally type su, you can use sudo -i and enter in your user password. Or you can just prefix commands you want to run as root with "sudo", see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information

when it asks the password just type it in and hit enter. It is accepting input, it just doesn't show that it is. It's a security measure.

Can you help with this problem?
