Dell Inspiron 1520: Sound not working on Gibbon

Asked by J.EricLewis

Greetings all and thank you in advance.

I am quite new to Ubuntu, having recently installed Gibbon on my Dell Inspiron 1520. I dual boot between Ubuntu and Vista which I assume is quite common.

At this point my sound card is completely undetected by Ubuntu. Is there any fix for this? I can not even open the alsamixer.

Please remember in your answers that I am brand new to Ubuntu (I do not even know how to save changes when editing files in terminal...)

Again, thank you so very much.

In Christ,
J. Eric Lewis

I too have a 1520, and the fix that works for most people is posted on the following wiki page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller#head-0e5a1c0b384a3886c7776913e401a039809c84c9

To keep things simple, all you have to do is open the Synaptic package manager (it's under the System->Administration menu) and install the package "linux-backports-modules-generic". Reboot when you're done and you should at least have a sound device.

If the sound is too quiet, you can go into the preferences for the volume control and add a slider for "Front" and turn it up.

Let me know how this works out for you.

I had a simthe same problem on similar setup (Ubuntu 8.04) and problem on my Dell Inspiron 1720 notebook.

I tried several methods of "https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller" without success.

Finally an upgrade to kernel version 2.6.24 saved the day (Adminstration->Synaptic Package "linux-image-2.6.24-24-generic" )...please be careful when updating, especially with your boot manager (e.g. the "menu.lst" - file).

After the upgrade the soundcard worked immediately.

Cheers,
Armin
