how to access system menu in ubuntu 11.04

i am a newbie to ubuntu and i dont know how to access the system menu in UBUNTU 11.04.somebody please help me

You can edit the preferences from the System Settings center, which is accessible from the System/Shutdown button (the top-right corner of the screen).

If you want to do this from the Terminal, you can use the "gnome-control-center" command.
