I get stuck after i put in username and password.

Asked by Beau DeWitt

After I put in username and password I can't get out of the command prompt. I'm a noob and don't know what to type to get past the command prompt. Someone told me to type startx but that just takes me to a blank screen. I'm running wubi on a windows 7 laptop, not sure if that matters.

So are you on about when you use sudo and you can't type your password?

Try this:
sudo service gdm start

That'll be for Ubuntu, not Kubuntu (replace gdm with kdm)

Also, what graphical card do you have, and have you installed any custom graphics drivers?

I think my graphics card is an intel hd graphics. I just got a new laptop two months ago with a dual core processor. Have not installed any custom graphics drivers. I typed sudo service gdm start, hit enter. Had to put in my password again and it went to a blank screen.

1. What release are you using - and is it plain Ubuntu or Netbook edition?
2. When you installed did you see the slideshow?
3. When you boot do you see the splash screen?
4. After the splash screen do you get to the graphical logon, or does it go straight to the command line login?
5. Computer brand/model?

Thanks

1. 10.10 and just plain Ubuntu.
2. Yes.
3. No.
4. No graphical logon and goes straight to command line.
5. Gateway and NV55C.

I can't find anything on this except someone else with the same problem. I assume there are some kernel boot options you need - but don't know what these are. Maybe something like: acpi_osi="Linux"

Here's a thread that talks about these: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132

Since this isn't a Wubi specific problem I'll move this back to the Ubuntu category and hopefully someone else has an answer.
