restricted extra's in Terminal window stopped at Configuring ttf-mscorefonts-installer

Ubuntu 10.10
I cannot enter any text into the terminal window when asked for my password to continue.
I can paste and write text in but when asked for my password to continue, I get a large flashing white square prompt but am unable to enter anything. If I hit RETURN I get an incorrect password message.
Can anyone please help a newbie?

Ooooops!
Whilst I do not see any text being entered, I type in my password and hit return and everything runs as it should.

When you type a password into terminal, you will not get (always), any screen chars back...
