Logging out with CLI

I'm trying to log out using the terminal. When I enter the command log out, the shell outputs
"bash: logout: not login shell: use 'exit' "

So I enter "exit" but all that does is close the terminal. I'm still shown as logged in according to the GUI. I want to log out using the terminal.

Try:

gnome-session-save --kill
