Hi Cathy,

To see the release of Ubuntu you are using, in a terminal type: lsb_release -rd or System -> About Ubuntu.
To see the version of the package you are using in a terminal type: apt-cache policy [packagename] or use Synaptic Package Manager.

for Example:

sudp apt-cache policy cups .. on my system prints:
ups:
Installed: 1.4.3-1ubuntu1.2
Candidate: 1.4.3-1ubuntu1.2
Version table:
*** 1.4.3-1ubuntu1.2 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates/main Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-security/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
1.4.3-1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

For System Information:
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release: 10.04

Kernel Info: uname -a:
Linux Q6600-WS1 2.6.32-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 28 05:14:15 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Hope that helps.
