Cut and paste from a terminal window, is there a way control-c can copy from the terminal window into a doc; do I need an add on app for such a function?

Asked by jeff

Hi,

I am able to high light in terminal window and use the scroll button to paste into some apps, however that does not work. Is there a way to copy or cut from a terminal window? Maybe there is software made for this purpose.
I believe one can in an apple computer. I have Ubuntu 10.4.
Thanks for the help ahead of time.

Cheers,
Jeff

Hi thanks anyway. It seems there is a different way for the terminal window than for most other apps. One must use shift+cntrl+c instead of control+c

Yes, also note you can always middle click to paste marked text. E.g. simply mark some text (whether a terminal window or not) then click in the window you want to copy the text and click your middle mouse button/wheel. Et voila.

Hi W. Prins,

Thanks for the comment! Yes, that is a handy feature, but unfortunately doesn't work across all platforms. Do you happen to know how to change the keyboard shortcuts from the presets in a terminal window, so that they can match the other parts of the system? I am getting better at it, but would be nice to have consistency.

Cheers,
Jeff

Hi jeff,
one reason why ctrl-c is not copy in the terminal .ctrl-c is used to break any ongoing process e.g. file copy and so you should not use the same for ctrl-c. and i guess that's why the shift in included. i guess that story extends to other bits on the terminal.

I forgot about the terminal kill command, one tends to use things without thinking specifics. Thanks for the help! It does make sense.
