Had you tried formatting it with gparted?

sudo apt-get install gparted

Administration->Gparted

I would guess that this is because the device is mounted read-only. If it's an external harddrive formatted in Windows, it's probably formatted as NTFS. You need to change the filesystem and format it again.

Install the ntfsprogs and gparted package, and use gparted to format the device as fat32 (if you want to access the device from other Operating Systems as well), or ext3/4 if you only want to access the device from Linux.

Can you help with this problem?
