Difference between stop and end

Hi, I've just noticed that the French version of this program uses the same word for "stop" and "end." I'd like to remedy that but I couldn't find an explanation of their differences in the Help or here in the translation strings. Does stop essentially pause the process so it can resume, and end ask it to terminate cleanly (as opposed to kill which I assume terminates it forcefully)?
