tens of processes with status zombie

After testing some video files with various tools, I have 8 gxine processes and 32 totem processes with status zombie in the process list of the system monitor. Ending a zombie process or killing a zombie process has no effect at all. They stay in the list. Why do they appear ? How to get rid of them else than restarting the pc ?

You would need to describe in some greater detail what have you been doing to make it possible to guess why do they appear.

How to get rid of them?
"killall -9 totem", "killall -9 gxine" doesn't work?
