memory leak

Asked by Balazs Pere

Gnome-shell uses more and more memory over time. In my PC the memory usage reached the amount of 1GB of RAM within some hours. The problem is present in 18.10 too.
There are tons of messages in bug trackers, but no activity by developers. Why? Is this problem not serious enough? Millions of Ubuntu users are affected.

I suggest you report a bug. You can do this by running:

ubuntu-bug gnome-shell

There is an existing bug report (#1672297), but no one (I mean developer) answers to the questions and nothing happens with the bug.

...and my question is why?

This is because the garbage collection doesn't work very well on NVIDIA. I've got the problem too, I think it got fixed in later GNOME versions tho. I've reported the bug on the Gnome GitLab, but I think it got solved on a later version.

Read this for more info: https://feaneron.com/2018/04/20/the-infamous-gnome-shell-memory-leak/

in the meantime, you can do "ALT + F2", and type 'r'. This restarts the gnome-shell, memory usage goes back to normal.

Can you help with this problem?
