2nd monitor shows same as first

This morning I did a software update. Since then my two monitors show the same information. Settings/ Display shows just the one hardware monitor but should show two monitors. I have tried changing the additional drivers, but the proprietary drives will not load. The radio button immediately reverts to the X.org driver even if I choose the other driver options. What can I do to get back the dual display?
