How to set an animated locked screen image if gifs aren't allowed?

I understand (as was explained to me in the linked bug) that gifs aren't allowed for animated backgrounds, so my question is then, if I have an animated gif file that I want to make my locked screen background, how do I convert it into many images and then configure the XML files so that it will work quickly as I want it to? Is there any way of achieving something like this?
