precise unstable: updates have left gnome 3 unusable, how can I repair gnome 3

Asked by BavarianPH on 2012-04-12

I was running precise gnome 3.4 quite comfortably.
(I hate unity)
Until I chose a 600 pkg precise update.
On reboot gnome 3.4 was unusable,
(just a blue, blank screen with nothing else)
Unity works.
Gnome 3.4 does not work.

How can I get gnome 3.4 to work again?

What do you mean by 'Gnome 3.4' ?

precise update destroyed gnome-shell 3.4,
gnome 3.4 desktop,
all gnome 3.4 extentions
log in to gnome takes one
to a blue, blank screen!

Unity stole Ubuntu,
Gnome is no longer called Ubuntu.
Ubuntu no longer credits gnome,
yet without gnome, there would
be no unity, no Ubuntu.

I think unity is causing gnome-shell to malfunction.

Still, the question remains, how can we get
gnome-shell 3.4 & gnome 3.4, as in gnome-shell 3.4
desktop, gnome-shell 3.4 extensions, etc., to

In case report a bug.
Users who like it rock stable should wait until point release.
Precise does not claim to be finished.
Today is final freeze and there're still 100+ bug fixes arriving daily.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get --reinstall install gnome-shell
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo reboot

followed your advise, still fails to start
A message pops up:

"No system tray detected on this system."
"Unable to start, exiting."

Please advice.

Consider reinstall of daily current or wait until final. In the meantime you could search bug reports if there is a known issue with gnome-shell. If not it may be hardware or misconfiguration issue.

BavarianPH (bavarianph) said : #6

the precise update seems the most likely
failure, the update some how erased or
misconfigured gnome, gnome-shell 3.4
worked fine
reinstall of daily current failed before,
I would like to preserve my current
over a hundred people are affected
by this anomally.

I will try the daily current.

Shouldn't be a problem if there is a separate /home partition or any backup.
At least then you'll find out if it's an user defined misconfiguration.

Source please.

About 100 people are "Also notified" about Question #193464 -

After reinstalling precise,
04/14/2012 daily desktop image (.iso),
for the second time, as you know,
only installs Ubuntu Unity;
after installing Gnome-Shell manually,
        sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/testing
        sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
        sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
        sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
        sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool

        sudo dpkg -i gnome-shell-extensions-common.deb
        sudo dpkg -i gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme.deb
        sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/gnome3
        sudo apt-get update
        sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-common
        sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme
        sudo apt-get -f install)

it finally worked. - :

How asinine to not even give Gnome-Shell
(v.3.4) at least equal importance with Unity.
As you wrote, "Unity is a shell for Gnome,
so Gnome must work for Unity to work..."
Gnome-Shell 3.4 is a by FAR a much better
Shell than Unity will ever be, yet Gnome-Shell
is not even called Ubuntu anymore, only Gnome.
Alas, millions of users are divided, perplexed,
and upset at those who killed the REAL Ubuntu,
and denigrated Gnome 3.4 as a slave to Unity!
Worse yet, Unity will alienate many open-
source, free seekers,
they will go right back to Microsoft.

If you want to see the real Ubuntu:
Ultimate Edition 3.2:
is unlike any Linux distro I have seen;
Ultimate Edition 3.2 has:
Gnome 3, Gnome Classic, Gnome fallback, Unity,
Unity 2D, and XMBC selectable via login screen.
 A crisp new GTK/3 theme &
a comprehensive software package. -
My choice. -

I feel, that Mark S. has sold us out!

Power corrupts, etc. ...!

Ubuntu, what is it?

BavarianPH (bavarianph) said : #9

Gnome-Shell 3.4 is working,
my advice:
carefully and sparingly add
to Gnome-Shell, reboot,
log out & log in often,
in order to reverse any
incompatible addition.

Daily Precise Xubuntu ISO. Doesn't install Unity.....

Glad you've got it working again. Enjoy Gnome-shell. You know it's available from universe repo without need of ppa?

Yep, similar to any other question or bug.
