Isn't checkgmail supposed to install itself as a panel applet? How did you install it, from source? non-debian packages? There is a package for it in the regular Ubuntu repository, and I'd assume that by installing that package, checkgmail will be configured to start automatically.
If it doesn't, either try adding the applet via "Add Panel" in the Gnome panel, or add it to the "Autostarted Apps" menu (or similar; that's how it's called in Xubuntu) which should be somewhere in the Administration or Preferences menu.

I don't see session under system --> Preference

Cruncher
idk it doesn't for me
I installed it by going to
Applications --> Add/Remove... --> next the show made it say all open source applications --> then next to search type checkgmail
I don't see Add Panel and Autostarted Apps but I see startup Applications
so I want to add and then I don't know what to put for the command

"Add panel" is probably wrong, I meant "Add new item", or whatever it's called. Should be marked with a "+".
Startup Applications will probably also work.
Open a terminal (Applications->Accessoires->Terminal) and type:
which checkgmail

This should give you the fill path to checkgmail, which ist the command you want to use.
