gnome-shell seems to work when I type:

gnome-shell --replace

Does anyone know how I can start gnome-shell automatic?
It looks a lot better then the Unity interface.

Help would be very much appreciated.

I have a related problem. I am unable to log into the Gnome Shell the first time I try. I get the error message that something has gone wrong, forcing me to log out. When I log back in again, thing seem to work just fine. I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal 64-bit on a Dell XPS 15 L501x laptop. Isolating the error message from ~/.xsession-errors for the failed login session, I found

JS ERROR: !!! Exception was: Error: Requiring NetworkManager, version none: Typelib file for namespace 'NetworkManager' (any version) not found
    JS ERROR: !!! lineNumber = '0'
    JS ERROR: !!! fileName = 'gjs_throw'
JS ERROR: !!! stack = '("Requiring NetworkManager, version none: Typelib file for namespace 'NetworkManager' (any version) not found")@gjs_throw:0
@/usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/status/network.js:8
'
JS ERROR: !!! message = 'Requiring NetworkManager, version none: Typelib file for namespace 'NetworkManager' (any version) not found'
JS LOG: NMApplet is not supported. It is possible that your NetworkManager version is too old

I should point out that I use wicd and not network-manager for connecting to my preferred wireless network. In fact, I removed network manager altogether, before setting up wicd. I stopped using network-manager because it would lose all my static DNS settings, and I'd have to manually edit /etc/resolv.conf (as root) to get the static DNS to work. Wicd seemed to have better support for static DNS, but it looks like network-manager's absence has broken Gnome Shell somehow.
