I keep being prompted for my password even though I set it to login automatically.

Asked by Robert Roberton

Ubuntu 10.10 keeps prompting me to enter my password even though I set it up to login automatically. Several attempts at login have failed.(meaning I've logged in and then a few seconds later, it would take me back to the login screen) Please help!! Are there any fixes for this at all?

If you are getting back to the login for no reason after seeing the desktop for a few seconds, then it must be crashing. You have to investigate maybe the video drivers or something else.

A fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 solved the issue this morning.however, even though I set it up for automatic login, I still get prompted for my password on startup and when exiting screensaver mode.

For the screensaver go to
System -> Preferences -> Screensaver and uncheck the lock screen option.
