Screensaver causes work on screen to be lost

Asked by Tom H.

I loaded Ubuntu 10.10 on my PC. When I have any work on the screen (spreadsheet, browser, editor, etc)
and the system goes into screensaver/lockscreen, the work is not there when I put my password in and
my account opens back up - why? Is this a bug? Why wouldn't the desktop retain all open work previously
on the screen after coming back out of screensaver that was there before the system went idle? This makes
the OS unusable to me. I never lost any work under Windoze XP when coming out of screensaver.

It's not expected behavior. It is a bug I never heard yet.

Also, if I go to the top righthand corner and manually select "Lockscreen", I don't
lose any work that was on the screen when I type my password and go back in. It
is only when the "idle" time is met on the screensaver setting that this problem happens.
So it appears that it is not just going into screensaver/lockscreen, it is also effectively
logging me out and automatically closing the programs that were open on screen. I
have looked thru all the menus/settings, but don't see what I can change to fix this.
My current workaround is to either lock the screen manually or set the screensaver
timeout to max - which I don't like to do since there is the potential for little hands in
the house to mess with my work if I walk away for a few minutes.

Could you check
   System->Preferences->Screen Saver->Power Management->On AC Power->Actions

I have this same issue, or something similar. When the computer kicks to screensaver it logs me out and kills all of the programs. It actually never show the screen saver. I have gone into the config and tried changing the time between the log out and the screen saver and that did not work. The log out button is not checked. This is a serious bug.

Could you provide me a screen shot of preferences of screen saver, via http://imageshack.us/
