my screen times out and i can't log back in

totally newbie to ubuntu, just updated to maverick, everything works great except when i walk away from my computer the screen times out/goes black and doesnt repsond to anything.

Do you use an ATi or Nvidia chip with proprietary drivers per chance...?

when you say walk away, how long were you gone for?

when you say black out, did the whole computer shut down?
