Screensaver hangs computers

Asked by dfarquharson

We have 24 Compaq Evo computers in a student lab, running Ubuntu 10.04. Some of the screensavers cause the computer to hang - can only push the power button to shut it down, then restart. I tried changing to xscreensaver, but same thing happens. I can use gconf-editor to remove the currently active 'theme' but with many students using the computers, sooner or later (usually sooner) someone chooses one that immediately crashes.
How can I disable the screensavers totally and just set the power save options to blank the screen. I need to leave NOTHING available for the students to set or change.

Try to copy and paste this string into terminal.
gconftool-2 --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/themes --type list --list-type=string '[]'

By the way Molecule is the screensaver that lock your pc due this bug:

This did not solve the problem. All the screen svers are still there, including the 'Ant Spotlight' which crashes the system. I upgraded one of the spare computers to version 10.10 beta and that does appear to solve the problem. However, I need a fix so I don't go crazy in the month until 10.10 is released.

Please set a fixed screensaver or entirely disable screensaver...

Can you help with this problem?
