The Blackberry Pearl's application on the CD most likely will not run "out of the box" (or "out of the CD"), so to speak, with Ubuntu. It has Windows installation software on it.

There are two things the CD will allow you to do:
- Sync contacts and calendar events; and,
- "Tether" (use your device as a modem, as you say). "Tether" is just the technical term for it :-)

Let's start with Tethering since that's what you want:

First, you need to install a package called "gnome-ppp". You do this by going to Synaptic or by the command-line. The easiest for me to just tell you how to do is command-line. So go to Applications > Accessories and then Terminal.

Type or copy and paste:

sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp

Enter your user password and type enter.

It should install the package.

--------Skip this if you already installed gnome-ppp--------
If you have problems with the terminal, or installing gnome-ppp, just click this link:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/gnome-ppp
And hit "Open" and run it. That will also install gnome-ppp. If you already installed it, skip this part.
------------------------End Skip------------------------------------

Now, for configuration.

Go to:

Applications > Internet > Gnome PPP

This is while your Blackberry Pearl is plugged in to your P.C. via the USB sync cable.

The settings on this screen should have been provided by your carrier.

For Alltel, through research on the Internet, these should be your settings:
Username: yournumber
Password: none
Phone number to dial: #777

For Verizon:
Username: <email address hidden>
Password: vzw
#NOTE: Having probems with your serial? Then do this:
#To find info use this command in terminal
Phone number to dial: #777

NOTE: Your number will not contain the country code (I.E. "1" for United States). It will just be, for example, 7819990011.

If neither of these are your carrier, please contact your carrier for advise or do a quick search on Google for your carrier or ask me and I can try to research it. But, it would be better to ask your carrier.

The first time you open Gnome-PPP click on Setup. On the first tab "Modem" you will see a tab called "Device." The first thing under the device tab is "Modem." Underneath this there is a drop-down box. Make sure USB Modem is selected. Then hit "Detect" by Device and it should detect your Blackberry device and treat it as a USB Modem.

Now UNCHECK "Wait for dialtone." Change "Dial attempts" to 5, just in case. You can change the volume here (for future reference too). For now leave it on for troubleshooting purposes. However, there shouldn't be any volume at all for this.

Click on the Networking tab:
Just ensure "Dynamic IP Address" is circled in and "Automatic DNS" is circled in. They already should be. If not, go ahead and do it.

Go ahead and click on the Options tab now. On the Desktop Integration section check these boxes:
- Dock in notification area
(This is so you can see what is going on and easily get back to this window at any time, just like your network manager or other desktop applets)

Under connection check:
- Auto reconnect
(this is just in case your signal is lost)

UNCHECK:
- Abort connecting if no dialtone
(there will never be a dialtone since this is not a regular modem)
- Check carrier line
(this is not a typical line)

You should be all set. Give it a whirl. If you have an active network connection (wireless or wired) disable it before trying this.

Let me know if you need advise on syncing contacts...but for now I think this is what you wanted/needed. Good luck.

Can you help with this problem?
