Update 8.04.1-->8.10 & GNOME PPP

Asked by Henry Peters

Hi,

I now have in my hands the Ubuntu 8.10 upgrade "live CD," I'm getting very dangerously close to seriously thinking of upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04.1 to 8.10. :) :( I do dial-up here, & currently use GNOME PPP (I think not the greatest, but gets me (usually) on line). Will the "live CD" upgrade also upgrade GNOME PPP, or at least retain it, is there another, more current (or better) such program for Ubuntu 8.10?

As always, thanks!

Henry

They have gnome-ppp for 8.10, but it doesn't come with it. You have to run "sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp" to install it. But you need a connection for that. I am right now searching for it on file, me friend is currently having the same problem.

Hi Michael,

Thank for reply.

I first looked for GNOME PPP in the live CD from which I did my upgrade
to 8.10, & it was not there. I then got my modem configured (from info
obtained initially at 8.04 installation) & used 'sudo wvdial' to
connect. I then updated my synaptic manager & add/remove, & found that
GNOME PPP was in add/remove. I added it.

Now my problem is that the log tells me:

---> unable to run /usr/sbin/pppd
---> check permissions, or specify a "PPPD Path" option in wvdial.conf

Soooo, the problem here, now seems to be: I do not really understand
what this means. In other words, I DO know how to call & open (so that
it will be saved) 'wvdial.conf' w/ 'sudo gedit wvdial.conf' command...
but then what? What is this "PPPD Path" & where, if anywhere do I place
it? & what or where might these 'permissions' be? There is 'New PPPD =
yes' line in this file...????

If anyone can help here, I would appreciate this immensely!

Thanks again,
Henry

p.s., I also have been trying KPPP (had to also download a bunch of KDE
files, which is ok, as I use other programs that use them also), but it
has some yet undetermined problem in logging in to my isp.

Shortly after I sent the last message, I used wvdial & accidentally
forgot to do the sudo part, I got (in my terminal) the exact same
message as in the above GNOME PPP terminal log... I looked in my '/etc'
folder as well as 'wvdial.config' & the permissions are both & all set
to 'root.' My rather uneducated guess is that this is an result of
choosing '/' for a mount point when I did my install... In any case, I
think I need to change the permissions here... to use GNOME PPP (&
probably KPPP?). Short term, I wish to *not* use wvdial unless
necessary... longer term, I need to know more about permissions &
various implications... any suggestions, directions for this problem?

Thanks for any help, again.

Henry
