I Can't logon to Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by egledr on 2010-01-21

The logon screen has changed to a very basic grey and blue color scheme and when I click on my user name and insert my password it seem like Ubuntu is starting up but then returns me to the logon screen and a message box appears with the following text: "The configuration defaults for the GNOME power manager has not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator." I have a dual boot system with Windows XP. Please help, I really like using Ubuntu.

After trying the Ctrl+Alt+F1, sudo startx; I got the following message:

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
if this server is no longer running, remove /temp/.X0-lock and start again.

I still need help. Thanks for the suggestion, keep em coming.

I'd try same procedure ctrl+alt+f1, but different cmd, unset gnome-power-manager settings.

If nothing helps maybe purge the package (gnome-power-manager) and reinstall. (not tested)
This will also remove ubuntu-desktop, which is a metapackage, you may reinstall it also.
