deleted the gnome top panel, can't get the default panel back (ubuntu)

this same thing happened to me. i put in the command in the terminal and when it asked for password i just put in my login p-word but it didnt work. what are you supposed ot do?

I have also tried this and can't get my software update notice or volume control back. I have deleted the .gnome2 file twice and restarted my computer and I still get the panel but no Software update notice or volume control. I was able to get the Applications , Places, System, and the date and time. I was also able to put firefox and gnome ppp up on the panel also.

Anyone know of another way to get the software update notice and the Volume control back up on the panel.

Hopefully you've fixed this by now Ron, but for those interested (Based on Ubuntu 7.10)...

For the software update notice, I think you just need to ensure the Notification Area is added to your panel:
Right click on the panel you want to edit,
select "Add to Panel...",
scroll down to "Utilities",
select "Notification Area",
click the "Add" button OR drag the icon do the panel.

Likewise, for the volume control:
Right click on the panel you want to edit,
select "Add to Panel...",
scroll down to "System & Hardware",
select "Volume Control",
click the "Add" button OR drag the icon do the panel.

I believe you should be able to follow the same steps to re-add the original top panel and panel items.
First Right click on an existing panel then "New Panel".
On that new panel, right click and "Add to Panel...". Add "Menu Bar" for the "Applications Places System" menus, "Notification Area", "Clock", "Quit...", "Battery Charge Monitor" (if applicable)... not sure about the Help icon offhand.

I messed around with the top panel and now amule won't show as a try icon even though I enabled that in amule preferences...
After reading through the other posts associated here I managed to restore the battery, volume and network icons, but not the amule.
Any suggestions?

I haven't used amule, but if you are trying to create an icon to launch the program (or any program) then you should be able to located the program in the Applications menu (and then under "Internet" I expect), and drag the icon from this menu to the panel. This will not remove the program from the menu, just make a shortcut copy.

If the program is not visible through the Applications menu, it may be hidden. You can edit which programs are visible through these menus by right-clicking on "Applications" and "Edit Menus".

If you are looking for a status type icon and it is not showing up on its own on the "Notification Area" panel item (see previous post to add) then I do not have any more ideas if not through the preferences of the program.

I type in (i even tried copying and pasting) sudo rm ~/.gnome2 and this is the message i get "rm: cannot remove `/home/me/.gnome2': Is a directory me@me-desktop:~$ " and it doesnt work.

i installed the xubuntu on my pc. accidentally deleted the panels and can't get it back. can i use the same procedure as described above, i'm not sure if this will work, and not sure of the outcome if i do. please help, many thanks

Here's a procedure that worked for me on 8.10:

$ gconftool –recursive-unset /apps/panel
$ rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
$ pkill gnome-panel

Then restart X (CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE)

Hi, i got rid the last gnome-panel of ubuntu 9.10 because I using AWN instead. But when I installed Cairo-Dock, I remove the AWN and disabled it. But the problem is that I cannot enable the Cairo-dock because I cannot access the ubuntu menu (because it already has no panels). How can I restore the panels? Or activate the Cairo-dock instead? help please

Do you have any panels on the screen, if so then you can click on it and
then on new panel. Otherwise hit ALT-F2 and type gnome panel

no, there's no panel left. I deliberately removed them because I was using AWN during that time. I cannot use the alt-F2 shortcut key because, it has already been disabled after I removed the last panel. Is there any alternative key to run applications or ubuntu menu, without using the gnome-panel?

Try it through the terminal, applications -> accesories -> terminal

When trying to access my file system, I receive a "Not authorized" message. I am the only user and admin for this operating system. So, with that, I found the gnome2 file through the search engine and still can't delete it because it is a directory file I believe is what it told me. I went ahead and tried that terminal thing mentioned at first and I pretty much get the same answer. What do I do with the panel problem as well as the authorization problem? Can that arise because I have Windows Vista on this same lap top?
